Under the new tax regime, salaried employees get a standard deduction of ₹75,000. After this deduction, if their taxable income is ₹12,00,000 or below, they get a full rebate under Section 87A — making their tax liability zero. This means gross salaries up to ₹12,75,000/year (₹1,06,250/month) attract no income tax at all.
The new regime has lower slab rates and a generous ₹12.75L zero-tax threshold, but eliminates most exemptions (HRA, LTA, 80C investments). The old regime allows deductions that can reduce taxable income significantly. If your 80C/80D investments and HRA exemption are large, compare both. For most employees without major deductions, the new regime now offers lower tax.
EPF (Employees Provident Fund) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme. The employee contributes 12% of their basic salary. Under statutory limits, this is calculated on a maximum basic salary of ₹15,000/month — so the maximum employee EPF deduction is ₹1,800/month. Many companies contribute on actual basic salary, which can be higher.

Professional Tax is a state-level tax on employment income. Most states that levy it charge ₹200/month for salaried employees earning above a threshold. States that levy PT include Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh do NOT levy Professional Tax.
On ₹10,00,000 annual income under the new regime: after ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income = ₹9,25,000. Tax = ₹0 (up to ₹3L) + ₹20,000 (5% on ₹3L–7L) + ₹22,500 (10% on ₹7L–9.25L) = ₹42,500/year. Since taxable income ≤ ₹12,00,000, the Section 87A rebate wipes this out → ₹0 income tax.
