Kenya's PAYE (Pay As You Earn) uses progressive tax bands on annual income. The rates range from 10% on the first KSh 288,000 to 35% on income above KSh 9.6M annually. A personal relief of KSh 2,400/month (KSh 28,800/year) is then subtracted from your computed tax, reducing your final tax liability.
SHA (Social Health Authority) replaced NHIF in October 2024. SHA contributions are calculated at 2.75% of your gross salary with no upper cap. SHA is mandatory for all formal employees and funds public health insurance for the employee and their dependants.
Under the new NSSF Act 2022, contributions are based on tiered earnings. The total employee contribution is 6% of pensionable wages, capped at KSh 2,160/month (Tier I + Tier II combined). These rates are higher than the old flat KSh 200/month that many employers previously used.

Personal relief is a fixed tax credit of KSh 2,400/month (KSh 28,800/year) that every employed Kenyan receives. It's subtracted directly from your calculated PAYE tax (not from your income), reducing what you actually pay. For example, if your calculated tax is KSh 5,000/month, your actual payment is KSh 2,600/month after relief.
On a KSh 100,000 monthly gross, your KRA PAYE after personal relief is approximately KSh 22,383/month, SHA is KSh 2,750/month, and NSSF is KSh 2,160/month. Total deductions: KSh 27,293 — leaving a net take-home of approximately KSh 72,707/month.
